Khutsong residents are embarking on an indefinite consumer boycott starting on Saturday, the South African Broadcasting Corporation reported.
The Merafong Demarcation Forum said the boycott was aimed at intensifying the defiance campaign against the incorporation of Khutsong into the North West from Gauteng.
Protests by the community have paralysed education and service delivery.
Spokesperson for the forum Smanje Mcwane said residents would boycott all businesses in the Carltonville CBD.
”As the community of Khutsong we are calling the boycott, especially here in the area of Carltonville where we are going to boycott all the shops in the town.
”People will start buying from our tuckshops in Khutsong and other areas,” he said.
There has been a call for the situation in Khutsong, especially the halt in education, to be resolved by the Constitutional Court as soon as possible.
Independent Democrats leader Patricia De Lille said the court was the best way to settle the dispute.
Classes at 12 schools in the area have been disrupted for more than a month due to ongoing protests by residents against their provincial demarcation. — Sapa
