It would be considered a phenomenon of sorts if Bafana Bafana completed a build-up for an important game without a single casualty or mishap — and Monday proved no exception when Vuyo Mere limped off the training pitch at the Germiston Stadium prior to Sunday’s African Nations Cup qualifier against Congo in Pointe Noire.
The Sundowns right back, in fact, damaged his ankle in an unofficial game following the end of the Premier Soccer League season and will be replaced in the 20-man squad by Bloemfontein Celtic’s James Madidilane.
”All the other 19 players took part in both training sessions at the Germiston Stadium,” said a Bafana spokesperson, ”and they seemed fit and raring to go as coach Carlos Albert Parreira put them through a succession of innovative routines.
”Now we’re holding thumbs there will be no further mishaps before the squad’s departure for Congo on Thursday,” said the spokesperson.
A draw would probably ensure South Africa a place in next year’s African Nations Cup finals in Ghana, if not guaranteeing heading the Group 11 qualifying segment.
Parreira, however, has reiterated the team ”is going to Congo to seek a victory — and will not adopt a negative approach”. — Sapa
