Former Boks back Jake White’s team

As South Africa prepares to open its Vodacom Tri-Nations campaign against Australia this weekend, former Springboks Andre Joubert and Wayne Fyvie have declared the team capable of making it all the way to the World Cup final.

”I think we definitely have the players now,” said 1995 Rugby World Cup winner Joubert, who along with Fyvie and former Springbok coach Rudolph Straeuli played in this week’s Origins of Golf Tour at Selborne Country Club as the amateur partners for some of the country’s top professionals.

”Jake White must be a happy coach at this stage to see that he can pick from about 40 players, any one of whom can make the A team at the moment. I really think he’s in the driving seat. At the end of the day it’s just up to him to pick his right combinations, and I think they can make the World Cup final.”

Former Springbok flank Fyvie was also confident of South Africa’s World Cup chances.

”I think we’ve got probably the best tight five in the world. If you’ve got that kind of platform to play with you’re giving yourselves more opportunities than your opposition. So I think with the tight five we’ve got we’ve got a very good chance.” — Sapa
