Gale-force winds caused damage to houses and shacks on the Cape Peninsula, the South African Broadcasting Corporation reported on Monday.
Winds of up to 60km/h ripped the roofs off almost a dozen shacks in Groot Brak River.
Local authorities were arranging alternative accommodation for the affected people.
In Mossel Bay, the roofs of a primary school and several houses were blown off. The roofs of four Oudtshoorn houses were ripped off and several streets in the town were littered with trees.
There were also reports that a delivery truck near Rawsonville had been blown over.
SA Weather Service spokesperson Calton Fillis said: ”There is a possibility of snow in certain areas and very cold and windy conditions are going to persist.”
