South Africa under-23 coach Steve Komphela is still not clear as to who will start for his team when they kick off their Sasol eight-nation tournament against China on Wednesday at the Johannesburg Stadium.
Komphela has to choose 11 players from a squad of 26 players, who are also fighting for a place in the team to compete at the All Africa Games in Algeria next month.
”It’s difficult choosing the best players for our first clash as I think the boys are holding back at training,” Komphela started, ”Also, they are a talented bunch and that makes selection just as difficult.”
The Amaglug-glug coach on Monday made two teams from his 26-strong squad and watched as the players battled on the University of Johannesburg turf. The pace was quick and although the players held back on tackles, they ran themselves ragged while the former Bafana Bafana skipper barked instructions and made changes from the touchline.
”I think they are holding back but I want them to show more, to do more,” he exclaimed. ”Tomorrow [Tuesday] we’ll do some light training and they’ll have the afternoon off.
Amaglug-glug’s kick off is scheduled for 3.35pm. — Sapa
