A decision on winter schools in KwaZulu-Natal is expected on Monday when various stakeholders will meet to discuss it, the provincial department of education said on Saturday.
On Saturday, neither the acting manager, Christi Naude, nor the head of the department, Cassius Lubisi, could say whether winter schools would continue.
Both said the department and teacher unions are to discuss a recovery plan on Monday and will only comment once they have reached an agreement.
Asked whether some teacher unions have signed the agreement that ended the public-service strike, Lubisi said ”that had nothing to do with the recovery plan”.
The winter school in the province is scheduled to run from Monday July 9 to Friday July 13. This falls during the official holidays for coastal schools.
In North West province, a task team has been appointed to look into the recovery plan.
Acting superintendent Mathanzima Mweli said the task team was formed at a meeting with teacher unions on Friday. The team will meet on Monday to take a broader look into the province’s recovery plan, he said.
Mweli said the recovery plan includes grade R up to grade 12. Teachers will teach extra hours and schools will continue during the September holiday as part of the recovery plan.
The task team will look into the remuneration of teachers during this period, he said, appealing to learners and parents to support the plan as it will benefit all.
The Western Cape earlier announced an education recovery plan to make up for the schooling lost as a result of the strike. The Free State has postponed its mid-year exams to August. — Sapa
