A Congress of Democratic Taxi Associations (Codeta) driver has been shot dead in Khayelitsha in the sixth taxi-related killing in less than a month, the Cape Times reported on Tuesday.
The murder of a 24-year-old Codeta-affiliated driver, who may not be named as his next of kin have not been informed, follows the murders of five Cape Amalgamated Taxi Association (Cata) drivers in the past three weeks.
Cata drivers have been victims in Bellville, Kraaifontein and Wallacedene during the past three weeks.
Police officers were dispatched to a reported taxi shooting in 38 Section, Harare in Khayelitsha, at 8.40pm on Sunday, said police spokesperson Elliot Sinyangana.
”On arrival, police found the driver already dead. His vehicle’s engine was still running.
”The taxi driver sustained a bullet wound to the head and other parts of the body,” said Sinyangana.
He said the owner of the taxi was told of the shooting and had asked to be allowed to break the news to the family.
”The motive for the attack is still unknown and we are investigating a case of murder,” said Sinyangana.
Driver Xolile Mbanyarhu (42) was shot dead in his taxi in his driveway in Wallacedene on July 4.
All five Cata drivers who were killed were members of the Bloekombos, Wallacedene Taxi Association, a Cata affiliate. – Sapa
