A disciplinary hearing for 13 warders suspected of helping Annanias Mathe escape from prison — or being negligent in the matter — was rescheduled on Friday.
The Manelisi Wolela of the Department of Correctional Services said the officials were scheduled to re-appear before a departmental disciplinary committee from next Monday to Friday.
”The department will now proceed with leading evidence against the officials who are facing charges for either negligence or collusion in the escape of Mathe from C-Max in Pretoria on November 18 2006.”
Mathe at the time was awaiting trial on 51 charges, including rape, robbery and car hijacking.
He was re-arrested on December 4 2006 when he hijacked a car at Craighall in Johannesburg.
The vehicle was fitted with a satellite tracking device, which led police and private security companies to Mathe after a chase, which saw him being shot three times in the leg and buttocks. — Sapa
