Rand hits two-week high against dollar

South Africa’s rand firmed to a two-week high on Monday and bonds also strengthened as investors slowly returned to high-risk assets.

At 06h45 GMT, the rand stood at 7,16 versus the dollar after firming to 7,1498 earlier — its strongest level since August 13, according to Reuters data.

Government bonds were also stronger, with yields on the most-traded 2010 bond down as much as 7,5 basis points in early trade. At 06h45 GMT it had pared some of those gains and traded 5,5 basis points down.

Yields on paper due in 2015 were 3,5 basis points lower at 8.36 percent. — Reuters
