Construction at the Green Point Stadium in Cape Town remained at a standstill on Friday as an unprotected strike by workers continued.
Striking workers had been locked out of the site, said Building, Construction and Allied Workers’ Union spokesperson Eugenia Peter.
While the union had expected to negotiate with Murray & Roberts project manager Andrew Fenton on Friday, he was not available. ”Management has gone to Johannesburg and they’ll contact us when they get back,” said Peter.
The workers were striking over travel allowances.
”Green Point Stadium is far away from the station, and the bus provided by the contractor cannot go right up to the station,” Peter said.
On Wednesday, a police officer was injured in a clash with striking building workers at the stadium. On Friday, the area around the stadium was quiet, Cape Town police said.
The stadium will be used during the 2010 Soccer World Cup. — Sapa
