Newcastle’s Barton refused bail on assault charge

Newcastle United and England midfielder Joey Barton was refused bail on Friday after appearing in court charged with assault.

Barton (25) was arrested in Liverpool, north-west England, in the early hours of Thursday and charged with common assault and affray. He was already on bail for two other alleged offences.

Magistrate Carol Myers told Liverpool Magistrates’ Court there was a risk of Barton offending again, adding: ”I also have to consider the safety of the public — you lashed out indiscriminately.”

Barton was arrested alongside two other people in the middle of Britain’s Christmas holiday season. He is likely to face a full trial on the charges in the new year. — AFP
