Baby killers given two life sentences

Three men convicted of killing a 15-month-old baby on her mother’s back in 2006 were each given two life sentences in the Johannesburg High Court, the South African Broadcasting Corporation (SABC) reported on Tuesday.

Judge Nigel Willis sentenced Ngidi Sibongeseni, Hlongwa Menzi and Gasela Sigidi to two life sentences each on Tuesday.

Khensani Mtileni, 15-months-old, was killed by a stray bullet during a shoot-out between the cash-in-transit robbers and security guards on October 10 2006 in the Johannesburg city centre while strapped to her mother’s back.

On Monday, Willis found Sibongeseni, Menzi and Sigidi guilty on 14 counts of murder, attempted murder, robbery and possession of arms and ammunition, the SABC reported.

The fourth accused was acquitted last week.

During sentencing, Willis said evidence given by an informer had been consistent.

Willis found that Menzi’s statement that he had been tortured was baseless and that he had contradicted himself. – Sapa
