Pretoria municipal workers strike over pay

Municipal workers in Pretoria began an indefinite strike on Monday to press for better pay and working conditions, their leader said.

Hundreds of members of the South African Municipal Workers’ Union (Samwu) marked the start of the stoppage with a march through the streets of the capital before handing in a petition demanding pay increases, and asking for a restructuring of the workforce to be negotiated between unions and employers.

“The marchers have arrived at the Tshwane executive mayor’s office to hand over a memorandum on our grievances,” said local Samwu branch chairperson Zebulon Monkoe.

“We are on an indefinite strike until our demands are met,” he said.

Officials of the City of Tshwane metropolitan municipality declined to comment on the protest. — AFP
