Sorenstam announces retirement

Swedish golfer Annika Sorenstam (37) announced her retirement from golf on Tuesday, two days after winning her 72nd LPGA title on Sunday at the Michelob Ultra Open in Williamsburg, Virginia, United States.

Sorenstam, who said she will retire at the end of the 2008 season, has won three tournaments this year after recovering from back injuries in 2007, when she did not win any tournaments.

With Sunday’s $330 000 victory, Sorenstam brought her career winnings to an LPGA record $22-million. Formerly the top-ranked female player in the world, Sorenstam has capped her professional career as one of the most successful players ever in women’s golf. — Sapa-dpa
