Eskom: Power cuts a possibility during winter

Unplanned power cuts at very short notice may be a possibility this winter, Eskom said on Wednesday.

”Unpredictable cold fronts that may occur this winter would bring up the electricity demand, thus the need to load-shed,” said spokesperson Andrew Etzinger.

”We must remember that we are still vulnerable at this stage … the cold weather could still affect power supply to the nation.”

He said Eskom was working closely with the South African Weather Bureau, but that only gave them a week during which to assess power supply.

”We will use the media, especially radio, television and print to issue warnings to the public,” he said.

Etzinger emphasised the need to save power during the cold weather.

”Power saving during these cold fronts is a must,” he said. — Sapa
