Sundowns, Santos in player swap

In a swap transfer deal that seems to have delighted both clubs, midfielder Tyren Arendse will be returning from Mamelodi Sundowns to Santos, while talented Thando Mngomeni will be moving from the Cape Town club to the Brazilians.

The arrangement was announced on Monday on the Santos website, with the People’s Team warmly welcoming back a player who was one of their most incisive match-winners before moving to Orlando Pirates and then Sundowns.

Arendse, for one reason or another, failed to maintain his verve and scoring prowess with either of the high-profile Gauteng clubs, culminating in a disappointing, injury-plagued 2007/08 season with Sundowns.

Mngomeni has long been considered one of South Africa’s brightest prospects, featuring for the national under-23 team before spending several up-and-down seasons in Europe.

His stay with Santos has been marked by sporadic brilliance and the move to a different environment could possibly give renewed impetus to his career. — Sapa
