Durban schoolteacher shot dead

A 42-year-old teacher was shot dead in a school driveway in Durban’s Umlazi suburb on Thursday, police said.

Superintendent Daniela Veldhuizen said the incident took place at Isidingo Senior Primary School in J Section at 8.20am.

Five people were seated in a car in the driveway when two women teachers walked past the vehicle.

”Three men alighted from the car and shot dead one of the women. The other woman was not injured,” said Veldhuizen.

The gunmen then got back into the car and drove off.

Two empty cartridges were found at the scene.

Veldhuizen said the motive for the killing was unknown. However, police had ruled out robbery, as no belongings were taken.

No arrests have been made and the school has been closed.

The province’s education minister, Ina Cronje, condemned the incident.

She sent her condolences to the woman’s family and said psychologists had been sent to the school to give counselling to teachers and pupils who witnessed the crime. — Sapa
