Kenyan robbers slash faces of missionaries

Kenyan robbers armed with clubs and machetes have attacked a missionary couple from Canada and the United States.

Local police chief Josephat Ndungu said on Thursday that John Bergen (70) and his wife, Eloise (65), suffered deep slashes on their heads and faces in an attack overnight in the restive Mount Elgon region of western Kenya.

They are in a hospital in critical condition.

Ndungu said Bergen, of Canada, and his American wife from Georgia arrived in the country last month. They were working with a Canadian charity, Hope for the Nations.

No further details about them were immediately available and the charity was not available for comment.

Police said that the thieves ransacked the couple’s house but residents recovered some of the stolen property dropped on a pathway leading to a nearby village. — Sapa-AP
