Gunmen open fire on Durban buses

One person was killed and several others injured when a group of gunmen opened fire on buses in Durban’s Inanda area early on Wednesday morning.

Police spokesperson Inspector Michael Read confirmed the attack on the buses, two of which went up in flames.

He said it had been reported that eight people were injured in the attack and that one person had been burnt to death.

In the attack, a taxi pulled up and its occupants opened fire on a bus. Another bus that was approaching on the main Inanda road to Durban was forced to turn around, before the gunmen opened fire on it too.

There were conflicting reports on how many people were injured in the second attack, but emergency services reported that they treated five people, two of whom were described as being in a serious condition.

All five were taken to Osindisweni Hospital near Verulam.

KwaZulu-Natal minister of transport Bheki Cele condemned the shootings, which he said were as a result of a feud between taxi and bus operators in the Ndwedwe and Inanda areas.

Details of the dead man were not immediately known and it was not clear whether he was the driver of the bus.

Read said that cases of murder, attempted murder and malicious damage to property had been opened. — Sapa
