A fire at the Kwa Maritane Bush Lodge in the Pilanesberg destroyed large parts of the luxury holiday resort, North West police said on Monday.
”The fire started in the kitchen just after 3am on Monday morning and then spread to the reception area,” said Captain Adele Myburgh.
According to the Kwa Maritane website, there are 25 chalets and 28 cabanas, with thatched roofs, on the premises.
”I understand that they refurbished the resort two months ago, so the damage would run into millions of rands,” said Myburgh.
Firefighters managed to extinguish the fire at about 10am, but the building had been severely burnt.
”The fire was difficult to put out because the roof of the building was made out of grass,” said Myburgh.
All the guests were evacuated to a nearby lodge; one was injured. — Sapa
