At least 300 arrested for ‘paramilitary’ activities

At least 300 people were arrested near the Hluhluwe/Umfolozi Game Reserve in KwaZulu-Natal for paramilitary activities on Friday, police said.

Police spokesperson Superintendent Jay Naicker said that the 300 were apparently part of a group called the South African Unintegrated Forces and had been training at a camp called Mlaba.

The arrests were undertaken early on Friday and the those arrested were taken to the Mahlabatini police station.

He said they were expected to appear in court on Monday charged with contravening the Criminal Law Second Amendment Act of 1992 which prohibits the training of people for ”the conducting of any military,
paramilitary or similar operation”.

On Wednesday the Mercury newspaper reported that there were as many as 600 former Inkatha Freedom Party self-protection unit members
