Two South Africans who had been held hostage by Nigerian militants have been released to Nigerian authorities, the Department of Foreign Affairs said on Thursday.
The South African High Commissioner to Nigeria, Stix Sifingo, confirmed the release of the two South Africans who had been abducted in the Niger Delta a week ago, spokesperson Ronnie Mamoepa said.
They were handed over to the Nigerian authorities on Thursday, Mamoepa said.
Their families had been duly informed about their release.
Mamoepa could not confirm the names of the two people released.
Minister of Foreign Affairs Nkosazana Dlamini-Zuma expressed appreciation on behalf of the South African government to the Nigerian authorities for helping to bring about a speedy and amicable resolution to the matter, he said. — Sapa
