Eleven dead in KZN bus accident

Eleven people died and 18 others were injured after the bus they were travelling in went down a bank near Hibberdene, KwaZulu-Natal (KZN), said ER24 on Tuesday.

Spokesperson Derrick Banks said at 12.30am on Tuesday a South African Road Link bus apparently collided with a Toyota Camry on the N2 south-bound near Hibberdene, 20km after Port Shepstone.

Superintendent Zandra Wiid added that the bus was travelling in a northerly direction next to a truck when it suddenly veered off the road.

”It went on to the southbound lane where it collided head-on with the Camry which was travelling south,” she said.

The Camry was flung on to the Hibberdene onramp 20m below while the bus came to a standstill on its side on the embankment.

”Five people in the Camry were killed instantly and one survivor was taken to hospital. In the bus, four people were found dead.”

At about 5am, two more crash victims died at the Port Shepstone hospital.

”Eighteen other patients were treated for various injuries on the scene,” said Banks.

A survivor, 18-year-old Siphindiwe Sobayeni, bravely assisted and comforted the other survivors while waiting for emergency personnel to arrive, Wiid said.

Sobayeni boarded the bus at Butterworth in the Eastern Cape. — Sapa
