Cholera has claimed its 11th victim in Limpopo, the provincial health department said on Monday.
Spokesperson Phuti Seloba said a 40-year-old woman died in Botlokwa in the Capricorn district on Sunday after she tested positive for the disease.
He said the province recorded 74 new cholera cases between Sunday and Monday afternoon. The new cases brought the total number of people infected with the water-borne disease in the province to 3Â 045 since the outbreak began in November last year.
Limpopo minister of health Seaparo Charles Sekoati encouraged listeners on Thobela FM on Monday to steer clear of drinking unpurified water from streams.
He told residents during the interview to take precautions and use household bleach to purify their water. Sekoati added that people must follow strict hygiene, such as washing hands after using a toilet or after changing baby nappies and before touching food, to prevent being infected.
He named Sikhukhune, Capricorn and Vhembe as the most severely affected districts, with 60 of the 74 new cases recorded in these areas. — Sapa
