Classes to resume at school after meningitis outbreak

Classes will resume at Mondeor High School following a meningitis outbreak, the Gauteng education department said on Friday.

Spokesperson Nanagolo Leopeng said the situation had been contained and a teacher and four students had tested negative for the disease.

”There are two more results that must be received to ensure that they are out of danger,” she said.

She said following the assessment of the department, health officials and the district officials, it was decided that classes would continue as usual.

A 15-year-old Mondeor High School girl died of bacterial meningitis on Monday.

The Department of Health said a team tested 600 pupils, staff and school committee members as well as 15 children and a driver who had travelled in a taxi with the pupil.

Preventative medicines were dispensed and a teacher and four pupils were admitted to hospital, but subsequent tests cleared them, said spokesperson Phumelele Kaunda.

One of the pupils is still in hospital, but is being treated for an unrelated illness.

On Friday, the team returned to the school to give preventative medication to those were not present on Thursday.

Signs of meningitis include severe headaches, fever, vomiting, irritability and and rashes on the body. It is spread through fluids from the mouth, throat or nose. – Sapa
