The head of the new directorate of priority crime investigation (DPCI) — which amalgamates the responsibilities of the Scorpions with those of the police serious and organised crimes unit — is to be appointed within a month, according to Nathi Mthethwa, the Minister of Safety and Security.
Speaking at a press briefing on Thursday, Mthethwa said that the new chief will be appointed by the minister after consulting the minister of justice and constitutional affairs. The decision will have to be ratified by Cabinet.
He told reporters that the Scorpions have already ceased to exist — even though the establishment of the new directorate has not yet been gazetted by the president. He added that all the cases being pursued by the Scorpions are now being followed up by the members of the new unit.
The establishment of the DPCI is taking a little time. At present, teams are in the provinces drawing up lists of assets, which have to become part of the arrangement. They are also working out the human resources available for the new unit. — I-Net Bridge
