The civil rights initiative AfriForum has laid a charge of sedition at the Garsfontein police station against the deputy national secretary of the Military Veterans Association of Umkhonto we Sizwe (MK).
AfriForum spokesperson Nantes Kelder said on Monday that charges against Ramatuku Maphutha were laid after he stated, during an event to commemorate MK soldier Solomon Mahlangu, that MK soldiers were deployed all over South Africa and were waiting to be activated in the trenches to fight the National Prosecuting Authority (NPA) unless the complaints against Jacob Zuma were withdrawn.
He allegedly said that MK would not hesitate to take Zuma to the Union Buildings with violence, and added: ”No Zuma, no country”.
According to Kelder, these statements were regarded in an extremely serious light and therefore Maphutha must be held accountable.
”These statements created an impression that MK runs a private army prepared to use violence against the State at will.”
Kelder said that sedition was a crime against the state, where the state’s authority was challenged or undermined. — Sapa
