Charges of assault and defeating the ends of justice against Blue Bulls rugby player John Mametsa were withdrawn in the Hatfield Community Court on Tuesday.
Mametsa (27), who plays right wing for the Blue Bulls, was arrested on October 18 last year. He had allegedly quarrelled with police officers at the scene of a minor traffic accident involving teammate Fudge Mbeta in Pretoria. Mbeta had allegedly reversed into a provincial traffic vehicle. When Mametsa saw the officers allegedly manhandling, Mbeta he reportedly intervened.
During the ensuing quarrel a traffic officer allegedly hit Mametsa before putting him into the officers’ vehicle. He spent seven hours at the Brooklyn police station before he was charged with assault and released on R500 bail. — Sapa
