Ekurhuleni emergency services battle two blazes

Ekurhuleni emergency services were fighting two factory fires in Kempton Park and Germiston on Friday morning, a spokesperson said.

The first fire of the day was at a packaging factory, Trig Distributors, in Chloorkop near Kempton Park, said Ekurhuleni emergency services spokesperson Roggers Mamaila.

That fire broke out at about midnight and had been contained. ”The flames have been extinguished but the cardboard used for packaging, which was inside the factory, is still smouldering,” he said.

”We now have another fire at another shop factory,” said Mamaila.

ABC Wool in Germiston, on the corner of President and Oosthuizen streets, was on fire. Emergency services were called to the fire at 8am.

”We do not know yet if anyone was injured or what the cause of the fire was,” said Mamaila.

He said the owner of the Chloorkop factory had assured emergency workers that nobody was inside the building at the time of the fire.

”Doors and gates did appear to be locked,” Mamaila said, but added that once this fire was out, the building would be stripped to ensure no one had been inside. The cause of this fire was also not yet known. — Sapa
