Three more bodies were found in the wreckage of a crash on the N1 outside Polokwane on Thursday morning, raising the death toll to nine, police said.
A bus and truck were involved in a side-swipe accident on the N1 about 15km north of Polokwane in the morning. Some of the victims were thrown from the bus and six people died immediately after the accident, Netcare 911 said earlier.
A fire also broke out in the wreckage and police spokesperson Captain Mohlake Mashiane said rescue workers cleaning up afterwards found another three bodies when they lifted the remnants of the truck’s load, which had been scattered on the highway.
Eight men and one woman died and 53 people were taken to three different hospitals in the region for treatment. — Sapa
