Jo’burg power restored after fire

Power in central Johannesburg was fully restored in the early hours of Monday morning following an underground fire last week, an official said.

”All the power in central Johannesburg has now been restored after the fire,” said City Power spokesperson Louis Pieterse.

About 40 street blocks in the city centre were without power after a cable tunnel caught fire last Sunday.

City Power had to provide back-up power for the entire week while installing new cables.

Also in Johannesburg, there were power blackouts on Sunday night in Sandringham and Sydenham, but electricity was restored soon after.

Problems at a substation supplying power to Hillbrow, Braamfontein, Melville, Auckland Park and Westdene on Saturday have also been sorted out, said Pieterse. — Sapa
