Government ministers who do not meet their performance targets may not necessarily be removed from their positions, President Jacob Zuma said on Friday.
“Some people may not be measuring up to the task because of expectations. We can’t put an axe [over their heads],” Zuma told the media in Pretoria on Friday.
Zuma and Deputy President Kgalema Motlanthe were in the process of signing performance agreements with the country’s 34 ministers.
Measurable outcomes
“We are saying that all ministers, all of us, must have measurable outcomes. If they [the ministries] don’t do so they are the ultimate people to account.
“I don’t think we should look at this as a way to try and punish people,” he said.
Zuma said the agreements and the set targets would not be made public as it was the prerogative of the ministers involved to divulge the information.
Making light of the questions posed by the media, Minister in the Presidency Trevor Manuel offered what his contract stated: “Mine says if I don’t meet the targets I will be sent for re-education for six months in Pofadder.” – Sapa
