Cape Town music picks: October 8 2010

Eco-conscious types can party to their hearts’ content at the greenest festival SA has to offer.

  • Iconic hip hop turntablist Ready D or reanimated munki-punk pioneers Boo! Phat ‘n funky electro favourite Sibot or modern rock godfathers Springbok Nude Girls? British indie dance rockers New Young Pony Club or soulful homegrown house hero Culoe De Song?

Ragga-rap goddess EJ Von Lyrik or broken beat upstarts Mix ‘n Blend? Dubstep diva Funafuji’s beatific beats or smooth ‘n funky African jazz flavours from saxophonist Moreira Chonguica? Israeli singer songwriter Idan Raichel or some improvised stand up comedy? Beat boxers or belly dancing? These are just some of the tantalising choices facing punters attending the Rocking the Daisies Festival this weekend. Now in its fifth season, the country’s original eco-friendly music fest continues its genre surfing evolution with the addition of the Cuervo Nu World Beat Barn stage adding some ‘foot-stomping beats inspired by traditional music from around the world” into the rock and electro-centric mix. Alongside usual major festival circuit suspects such as Zebra & Giraffe, Dirty Skirts, Tidal Waves, Taxi Violence, Albert Frost, City Bowl Mizers, Flash Republic and Haezer, audiences now also have the opportunity to tune into the global grooves of Afro-Indo jazz fusion favourites Babu, Congolese singer songwriter Sylvestre ‘The Bottle’ Kabassidi, nouveau electro-tango stylists Lo Rez, carny-folk blues rock outsiders Mr Cat and the Jackal and more.

Rocking the Daisies, Cloof Estate, Darling, October 8 to 10. Entrance is R465 (pre-sale), R395 (Saturday and Sunday) or R150 (Sunday). No ticket sales at the gate except on Sunday. Book at www.webtickets.co.za. Website: http://rockingthedaisies.com
