Durban art pick: October 22 2010

The work of Durban’ s Bronwen Vaughn-Evans takes the from of intricate, mysterious and multi-
layered palimpsests which combine compelling narratives of innnocence, experience, magic
and myth in refreshingly unsentimental fashion.

This is particularly evident in her new solo
exhibition at artSPACE durban entitled Early Learning (Fairytales and Urban Myths) in which
enormous rabbits find themselves witnessing Theseus doing battle with the Minotaur and The
Little Match Girl finding herself adrift on the streets of modern-day Johannesburg. On show in
a different section of the gallery is (in)different, the exhibition by Faye Spencer and Vulindlela
Nyoni in which the two artists on wood and paper explore notions of subtext and the spaces
between meaning and making.

artSPACE durban, 3 Millar Road, off Umgeni Road. The exhibition runs until October 30.
