Entertaining Other Thoughts

I am listening to a track by Mark Ronson and D’Angelo, a song that I have just downloaded.

I am also listening to the Gorillaz and Al Green — that’s what’s playing on my iPod at the moment.

I also like a bit of jazz and electronica. I don’t listen to rap as much as I used to.

I listen to whatever is different to what’s coming out in the mainstream — anything that breaks boundaries. What’s coming out now in the mainstream is not my vibe.

I don’t really buy newspapers, I now get the stories online. You know, on Twitter, as soon as the stories break, I get to read the stories online.

So by the time you buy the newspapers, you’ll have read the stories. I read a lot of non-fiction.

The last book I read was Status Anxiety, a work of psychology by Alain de Botton. It deals with issues around status.

I am not much into fiction. But I am a big fan of biographies and the last one I enjoyed was Room Full of Mirrors by Charles R Cross, a biography of the rock star Jimi Hendrix.

I haven’t read any political biographies but the last autobiography I enjoyed was Still Grazing by trumpeter Hugh Masekela. I watch mostly news and sport and my favourite TV show is the Mythbusters, perhaps the best show I’ve ever seen.

I love and support Arsenal. My favourite local team used to be Lightbody’s Santos [now known as Santos], as a Cape Town kid. The other team I’ve always followed is Orlando Pirates. Every once in a while a brilliant midfielder comes through their system.

I grew up in Cape Town and now live in Jo’burg. I prefer Jo’burg. I find Cape Town racist.

In Johannesburg I normally hang out at The Attic in Parkhurst. I prefer Cape Town’s live music scene — it’s big and varied and the night life is better and more interesting.

The last movie I watched was one in which Drew Barrymore acted, a movie my partner forced me to watch.

I do go to the theatre but I’ve not been in a while. The last show I watched was Swan Lake, a couple of months back; it was at the Jo’burg Theatre.

The last music gig I attended was one at which Thandiswa Mazwai played. It was at the Bassline. She was awesome. It’s a bit difficult for me to go to live events because most of my gigs happen at night, but I try to go whenever I can.

I am into the XBox and I play Fifa games. I sometimes go to the stadium. The last game I went to watch was the Pirates-Free State Stars match, a 0-0 draw. — Percy Zvomuya
