South African TV presenter Matthew Stewardson died while on holiday in Jeffreys Bay, Eastern Cape police confirmed on Saturday.
“According to information from witnesses on the beach, he collapsed. People called a lifesaver to help him and a paramedic, but it was too late. He was already dead,” Warrant Officer Marianette Olivier said.
She said he was not in the water as rumoured, but on the Jeffreys Bay beach on Friday when he collapsed just before 3pm.
Police opened an inquest docket and a post-mortem would take place early next week to determine the cause of death, Olivier said.
“No foul play is suspected.”
The former KTV and Idols presenter would have celebrated his 36th birthday on Saturday. — Sapa
