Durban theatre pick: January 21 2010

Decadent cabaret is on the menu this week.

  • Awarded 8 stars out of 10 by The Citizen, Terence Bridgett’s one-hander All Soaped Up was lauded for its wickedly funny script and Bridgett’s versatile, poignant and luminous performance. With its descriptor of ‘lather the devil you know”, the work is alliteratively described as ‘a cabaret by a Capetonian about the calamities, the crap and the caviar of a career.” Bridgett plays central characters in small-screen soapies Isidingo and Erfsondes and recently made his big-screen debut in Disgrace but nevertheless remains steadfastly committed to the one-man stage cabaret performed live before enthusiastic audiences in intimate settings. In this, his latest outing, Bridgett takes a frank, revealing, behind-the-scenes look at life as a ‘soap star” and the thin, oft-blurred, ever-gilded line between fact, fantasy, foam, fluff, fame and fiction. The show is directed by the acclaimed Kurt Wustmann with musical direction and piano accompaniment by Coenraad Rall who conjured up the smorgasbord of songs which explore everything from leaving limo’s to losing your lithium; from mobs in Meyerton to media madness and, last but not least, a deep and meaningful reading from the Gospel according to Glamour.
