Calm returns to Medunsa campus

Accommodation will be provided to all students at the University of Limpopo, management and students resolved at a meeting on Tuesday.

“It was agreed that accommodation shall be provided to all students irrespective of level of study but preference shall be given to those that have applied,” university spokesperson Kgalema Mohuba said in a statement.

“In addition, the quota system shall be applied given the scarcity of current resources.”

The agreement was reached at a meeting at the institution’s Medunsa campus on Tuesday.

Riots broke out on Monday night with students barricading streets with rocks, setting alight rubbish bins and pelting cars with stones. They were protesting against rising fees, poor equipment on campus and insufficient university residences.

“Four issues emerged that included accommodation for post graduate students, alleged maladministration and irregularities in the department of dietetics/human nutrition, and the progression rules,” he said.

It was decided that the current rules could not be scrapped overnight and that a process had to take place.

“Students were advised to send a proposal to the University Senate in relation to the rules that they are contesting,” said Mohuba.

” It was further agreed that those students who are currently affected by these rules should forward their request to the Senate Appeals Committee that shall hear such matters.”

A commission of enquiry would be set up to investigate claims by students of maladministration and irregularities in the dietetics department.
