Zuma Congratulates Museveni

President Jacob Zuma congratulated Ugandan President Yoweri Museveni on his re-election on Monday.

“I wish to convey my warmest congratulations on behalf of the Government of the Republic of South Africa and its people on the occasion of your re-election as President of the Republic of Uganda,” Zuma said in a statement.

“I would like to reconfirm my appreciation of the excellent, warm and close relations that exist between our two countries. It is furthermore my profound wish that these close and brotherly ties will continue to prosper during your new term of office.”

Museveni, Uganda’s leader for 25 years, won Friday’s election with 68% of the vote.

Associated Press reported on Monday that two of the losing Ugandan presidential candidates threatened to mobilise mass protests against the government. Museveni said last week he would jail anyone who tried to spark Egypt-style unrest.

African Union election observers said Uganda’s presidential poll suffered from several shortcomings but Museveni’s team denied allegations that the vote was not fair. — Sapa
