“I think we’re making music for the apocalypse,” says Michael Vincent Patrick.
“The state of society is at a place where people just don’t give a fuck and that’s what inspires our music.”
The Designer Drugs DJ and producer is only half-jokingly explaining the method in the genre mashing madness of their new album, Hardcore/Softcore. It’s an aptly bipolar billing that sees punishing electro-industrial punk, pounding club bangers and up-tempo fist-pumping floor fillers grind up against vintage electro-funk, Italo-shoegaze and even some Nordic pop.
Vincent’s concert at Discotechque promises to be equally polymorphous and perverse. ‘It gets pretty wild,” admits Michael. “Even though we’re mellow, there’s lots of stage diving and almost slam dancing. It’s next level dance club shit that almost morphs into that ’90s hardcore/punk vibe.'” Homegrown heroes BTeam, Kennedy, Tommy Gun and Lapse mash up the cutting edge, underground, bass-heavy, synth-laden electro, breaks and beats on support.
The Assembly, 61 Harrington Street, East City, April 1, 9pm. Entrance is R70 (pre-sold) or R90 (door).
