Awards for grade 6 learners

The Student Sponsorship Programme (SSP) is awarding scholarships for the finest high school education to academically distinguished Grade 6 learners from low income backgrounds in Gauteng and the Eastern Cape.

From April to July 2011, the organisation will be scouting Gauteng and the Eastern Cape for the next generation of South Africa’s leaders.

For the past decade, the SSP has provided excellent high school education to deserving learners to ensure that upon matriculating they will qualify for tertiary entrance and more importantly be sufficiently prepared to cope with the rigors of university.

Learners are identified while in primary school and are awarded five- year high school scholarships to attend some of the country’s top high schools. SSP has an impressive list of 25 partner high schools in Gauteng and Eastern Cape.

SSP Acting Executive Director, Laurence Corner said “in the past decade, the organisation has seen more than 900 scholars benefit from interacting with SSP. Currently, more than 300 learners are placed in our partner schools. Out of 271 of SSP’s Alumni, 247 are in the best universities in South Africa and the United States. In addition to that, 400 grade seven learners have gone through our Scholars Development Programme since its inception in 2008.”

Each year, the organisation raises more than R10 million for scholarships, wherein the average value of each scholarship is R215 000. Corner says that in future, SSP hopes to increase its footprint in South Africa and reach more deserving children.
