The Michaelis School of Fine Art holds an auction, and Irma Stern’s work is placed alongside contemporary artists this week.
? Like many of our educational institutes, the Michaelis School of Fine Art is at an impasse. On the one hand it faces budget cuts, tuition hikes and measures to standardise and regiment learning. On the other, it finds itself needing to address transformation and the demand to supply bursaries and scholarships that comes with it. The Michaelis Exhibition and Auction is an innovative attempt to address these challenges. Comprising work donated by its alumni, staff and friends, it is a display of generosity and a testament to the value of Michaelis as a vital, critical and communal space. The closing auction on July 20 promises a big turnout of collectors and an opportunity to raise funds for a worthy cause.

? Beguiling: The Self and the Subject places the work of Irma Stern in relation to work by contemporary artists. The focus is on the body as a conduit for investigating social and existential circumstances and the thorny issue of representations of the body in art. Curated by Kirsty Cockerill, it brings together a diverse body of work, including that of Lisa Brice, Steven Cohen, Hasan and Husain Essop, Pieter Hugo, Zanele Muholi, Andrew Putter, Guy Tillim, Nontsikelelo Veleko and Sue Williamson.
