CONSULTING SERVICES FOR DESIGN AND SUPERVISION OF THE REHABILITATION OF THE NYENYE – MAPOTENG – MAKHOROANA ROAD (37 Km)
Project ID No.:-P119443
The Government of the Kingdom of Lesotho (GOL) has received financing from the International Development Association (IDA) towards the cost of the Additional Financing to ‘Integrated Transport Project (ITP)” and intends to apply part of the proceeds for consultancy services. The services include ‘Consulting Services for Design and Construction Supervision for the Rehabilitation of Nyenye – Mapoteng – Makhoroana Road (37 Km)”.
The Nyenye – Mapoteng – Makhoroana Road is the main arterial road traversing the district of Berea in the north of Lesotho. The road forms an important link between the business centres of Mapoteng and Makhoroana and the national road network as well and contributes immensely to the economic prosperity of this agricultural district and the country at large. The planned rehabilitation is aimed at improving intra communication between the district economic centres and to lower vehicle operating costs.
The road was upgraded to bitumen standard by the then Roads Branch of Ministry of Public Works and Transport, using its own forces, between 1987 and 1990. Intensive spot repairs and resealing were carried out on the road about 10 years ago using local contractors. However due to insufficient routine maintenance effort coupled with natural calamities like exceptional storms during summer rainy seasons, as happened in the past rainy season contributed to the present dilapidated condition of the road which makes them barely trafficable. Presently the road is pot-holed, raveled, deformed and the recent summer storms severely worsened the situation.
The planned rehabilitation works shall comprise of amongst others, milling or replacement of failed road sections, reworking of affected road layers, improvement of drainage requirements, reworking of the road formation level etc, and a complete resealing of the road surfacing in accordance with the adopted design strategy. The objectives of engaging professional services are for the design of an economically justified detailed rehabilitation strategy based on sound engineering investigations and analyses, tender documentation, works tender procurement assistance and supervision of rehabilitation works as the ‘Engineer” in accordance with FIDIC Conditions of Contract,. It is estimated that this assignment will take duration of 11 months.
