Pele has been named as the honorary ambassador for the 2014 World Cup to be held in Brazil.
The football great accepted the invitation from Brazil’s President Dilma Rousseff.
Pele’s role will be rallying Brazilians around delayed efforts at getting ready for the tournament. He will also be promoting Brazil’s preparations abroad at football events.
After meeting with the president in Brasilia on Tuesday, Pele says he knows many Brazilians are dismayed by the slow pace of preparations.
Despite sharply criticising delays in building stadiums and other infrastructure, Pele says it is time for Brazil to come together and complete the task.
He asked all Brazilians to support the work so the nation pulls off an event it can be proud of. — Sapa-AP
