Does hip-hop consciousness still have currency in an era when bling-and-booty rapped braggadocio dominates the mainstream airwaves?
Veteran DJs Real Rozzano and Mario Roach certainly think so. For the past two years they have showcased an uncompromisingly eclectic mix of hip-hop sounds at their weekly Best of Ekapa Underground Hip-Hop sessions every Thursday. To celebrate Women’s Month, the duo has joined forces with the all-female crew, SiSTAR cypHER, to host a special Ladies in Hip-Hop session. A roll call of femcees, including Black Athena, Andy Leigh, Sister G, Ashleigh, Lithal Li, Swifty, Shami Shamrock, Lorn-Lee Henderson, Coco Putuma and Robyn-Jill Radcliffe, strut their skills alongside DJs Katzo and Que.
