Disciplinary Hearing Rules Against Sheryl Cwele

A disciplinary hearing has ruled against convicted drug dealer Sheryl Cwele, her lawyer said on Thursday.

‘The disciplinary hearing committee ruled against her and we have been requested to make submissions [in mitigation of sentence],” said Cwele’s advocate, Mvuseni Ngubane.

The hearing was convened to determine if Cwele should keep her post as the Hibiscus Coast municipality’s health director after she was convicted of drug dealing by the Pietermaritzburg High Court on May 6. She was sentenced to 12 years’ imprisonment.

Hibiscus Coast municipality municipal manager Sbu Mkhize also confirmed that the ruling had been made.

‘The chairperson of the committee has made a ruling and has requested both parties to submit mitigating and aggravating circumstances to enable him to hand down a sanction,” said Mkhize.

Ngubane said he was still waiting for the employer to make its submissions.

The outcome of the hearing was expected to be made public next Friday.
