Durban art picks: August 5 2011

Look at the world through different eyes this week.

? From the Eyes of the Youth is the name of both an exciting photographic initiative by the Collective and an exhibition of the fruits of the project. The participants initially kept visual journals and collected images on several themes, which were then explored in depth at meetings with the project co-ordinators. The themes ranged from the universal (such as joy and fear) to the specific (such as culture and education), which they had to explore in their communities.

The Collective, 48b Florida Road, until August 13. Tel: 031 303 4891. Email: [email protected].

? Three exhibitions are on at Durban’s KZNA gallery. Isomorphicintergrammar Code Switching is the tongue-twister of an installation by Lolette Smith, a South African sign-language interpreter who ties together language codes and makes the invisible visible, enriching our understanding of communication. Phenomenal Engagement is a collaboration by Chris and Marlene de Beer, both lecturers in the fine art and jewellery design department at Durban University of Technology. The exhibition extends the boundaries of what is conventionally considered jewellery. Renowned Durban photographer Angela Buckland presents a new photographic installation, Block A, Thokoza Women’s Hostel. The compelling creation is made up of 700 small photographs, which together form a large-scale installation that depicts the beauty and intimacy of each hostel resident’s living space.

KZNSA Gallery, 166 Bulwer Road, until August 20. Tel: 031 277 1705. Email: [email protected]. Visit: www.kznsagallery.co.za.
