‘Most wanted’ criminal escapes — on crutches

A manhunt was launched for one of the country’s most wanted criminals, Bongani Moyo, who escaped from the Pretoria Regional Court on Wednesday morning.

Moyo, allegedly linked to more than 30 bank robberies, escaped from court, said Captain Katlego Mogale.

“It is alleged that Moyo, who is on crutches, was not locked up inside the cell and or in shackles. He was sitting between court 16 and 17 and escaped through court 16.”

Police were investigating possible negligence.

This was Moyo’s second escape from police custody this year. He previously escaped from Boksburg prison in March.

“We are again appealing to the members of the community to assist in putting him behind bars.”

Moyo, if caught, would be charged with escape from lawful custody.

He was re-arrested on May 12 near the Beitbridge border post in Limpopo when he returned to South Africa to seek medical treatment.

Colonel Neville Malila said it was believed Moyo, 29, had fled to his native Zimbabwe for three days, but had tried to return for “urgent medical attention”. He did not disclose what was wrong with him, saying this was part of the investigation.

At the time police described him as “dangerous”. — Sapa
