Cape theatre picks: August 19 2011

Cape Town City Ballet presents Swan Lake, Tchaikovsky’s tale of love triumphing over evil.

The principal ballerina of the English National Ballet, Daria Klimentova, and partner Vadim Muntagirov will be guest stars. Klimentova was born in the Czech Republic and trained at the Prague State Conservatory. She was invited to join Capab Ballet (now Cape Town City Ballet) in 1991 and gained a substantial following before leaving for the United Kingdom. Russian-born Muntagirov completed his training at the Royal Ballet School in London and joined the English National Ballet in 2009. The Cape Philharmonic Orchestra will accompany all performances. Megan Swart, Xola Putye, Laura Bösenberg and Thomas Thorne are in leading roles.

Comic actress Anthea Thompson’s hysterical creation, Bertha Cummings, now has her own show in Living Remote. This eccentric septuagenarian, who originated in a sketch in the hit comedy, Cracks and the City, shares her guide to life, love and pharmaceuticals. She explores the lighter side of ageing and the delights of roaming the Wynberg pharmacy for the latest geriatric accoutrements, as well as the pleasures of healing and dealing. Bertha welcomes all audience types — healthy and ailing — so don’t miss this one-woman romp from a character who is the southern suburb’s Mother Theresa, but in better sandals.

Kalk Bay Theatre, 52 Main Road, Kalk Bay. Until September 23. Tel: 073 220 5430. Website: www.kbt.co.za.
