Cape music picks: December 2 2011

Catch rapper Lil Wayne in Cape Town during his worldwide I Am Still Music Tour.

At his peak — from the December 2005 release of Tha Carter II through to 2008’s Tha Carter III, Lil Wayne was said to be the “best rapper alive”, earning cred on both the streets and the charts. Then came his eight-month incarceration on gun charges, followed by a duo of flops — Rebirth and the “unfocused”, “stop-gap” collection I Am Not a Human Being. So is Weezy just the latest in a series of musicians past their sell-by dates who have graced our shores? Not if the high praise coming to him from the guest artists on his latest album, Tha Carter IV, is anything to go by.

Bellville Velodrome, Carl Cronjé Drive, Bellville, December 7 at 8pm. Entrance is R350 to R600.

? Join the Norwegian duo Datarock in celebrating the pervasive amorality of capitalism, cataclysmic climate change, the debt crisis and the pending apocalypse when they headline at the first South African leg of the Vans Off the Wall Music Night.

Other crews adding to the irony and the ecstasy include rockers Juggernaut, post-prog purveyors Sabretooth and the punkish the Great Apes.

The Assembly, 61 Harrington Street, Cape Town, December 3, from 8pm until 4am. Entrance is R50 — or R60 at the door. Book at www.webtickets.co.za.
